Dear Friends,

For this Giving Tuesday, we invite you to make a meaningful impact on California’s democracy by supporting the California Voter Foundation (CVF).

In this, our 30th year, CVF has been monitoring several competitive California races in the November 2024 election. This project is giving the public and media a clear picture of how close the margin is in undecided contests and how many ballots remain.

The Close Count Transparency Project is the brainchild of Kim Alexander, who has guided CVF through three decades of changes in elections in California. The project has been featured in stories just this past month in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, CalMatters, Spectrum News and KQED among others.

Hi Folks,

Over the Thanksgiving break, we continued monitoring ballot processing and updated our Close Count Tracker with new numbers in close contests as more votes were added to results.

Hi Folks,

We are now three weeks past Election Day and two California U.S. House races along with one state legislative contest remain too close to call. We've created some charts below showing how CD 13 and CD 45 results have tightened and changed since Election Night to help illustrate how incredibly close these two contests are.

Hi Folks,

We are two weeks past Election Day and several California U.S. House and legislative contests and one state ballot proposition remain too close to call.

In Southern California's Congressional District 45, Republican incumbent Michelle Steele has seen her lead over Democratic challenger Derek Tran shrink from a high of 5.1 percent the morning after Election Day to 0.01 percent on Saturday; on Monday, Tran took the lead by 102 votes. His lead has grown a bit since then but is still incredibly narrow, with just 314 votes currently separating the two candidates and an estimated 72,000 ballots remaining to process in the counties that are home to this district as of the vote count this morning.

There are still two U.S. House seats in California that remain "too close to call". In Southern California's CD 45, Republican incumbent Michelle Steele has seen her lead over Democratic challenger Derek Tran shrink from a high of 5.1 percent the morning after Election Day to 0.02 percent as of Friday. This amounts to just 58 ballots separating the two candidates, with an estimated 151,000 ballots remaining to process in the counties that are home to this district.

Hi Folks,

Many California congressional and legislative races remain too close to call. CVF's Close Count Transparency Project is tracking a number of close U.S. House and legislative races which you can view in the CVF tracker.

Hi Folks,

Many California congressional and legislative races remain too close to call. CVF's Close Count Transparency Project is tracking eleven congressional races, the outcome of which will help decide which party controls the House of Representatives next year. Six close legislative races are included in the CVF tracker as well.

Hi Folks,

Many California congressional and legislative races remain too close to call. CVF's new Close Count Transparency Project launched earlier this week and we are tracking eleven congressional races, the outcome of which will help decide which party controls the House of Representatives next year. Six close legislative races have been added to the CVF tracker as well. Since Wednesday, some margins narrowed, some widened, and another congressional race, CD 40, was called by the Associated Press.

While the Presidential Election has already been decided, there are many contests in California that are still too close to call. CVF's new Close Count Transparency Project launched last night and we are tracking eleven congressional races, the outcome of which will help decide which party controls the House of Representatives next year. Additional close legislative races are being added to the CVF tracker.

Please see CVF's Close Count Report #1, summarizing election night and morning after election results. The story so far is that while several Democratic candidates in contested districts were doing well on Election Night, the numbers changed overnight as more ballots were processed and by morning Republican candidates were overall doing better than the Democrats.

Hi Folks,

Well it is finally here, Election Day! Tomorrow everyone who is going to vote and hasn't done so already will cast ballots across California and the nation. This edition of CVF-News shares last-minute voting tips, a reminder about Election Hero Day, a new election song, and where to find election results starting Tuesday night.

This has been a challenging election for all the people involved in election administration - Secretaries of State across the country, county election officials, their staff, temporary workers and poll workers, many who have been subjected to ongoing criticism and distrust for years now since the 2020 election. As CalMatters recently reported, half of Shasta County's elections staff has left their jobs due to the harsh scrutiny of election observers questioning their integrity.
